Stage 8: Pontevedra-Caldas de Reis

The Pontevedra - Caldas de Reis stage is a pleasant journey, with no major difficulties. After saying goodbye at the Burgo Bridge, the crossing becomes simple, with no noteworthy elevations and an excellent selection of churches and other religious monuments.

The vines surround the houses and accompany us along the route which, due to its humility, gives us the time and desire to enjoy every step. Before meeting the N-550 road again, we come to an area of waterfalls. It's a short detour that's worth the time.

Then, quickly, we are in Caldas de Reis. We are greeted by a gentle village and a town center where we feel like resting and pondering the path we have traveled so far.

Pontevedra-Caldas de Reis: Itinerary

A: Pontevedra

Pontevedra in the morning has a certain tempo. As you walk along the road that leads to the Burgos bridge, you can see many monuments of religious iconography, such as the Chapel of the Pilgrim Virgin, which occupies the center of the Plaza Peregrina.

B: Millario

This is the second Roman milestone on the Way. There's a bench next to it where you can rest, and it's from here that we leave the road and the more urban area to enter the woods entirely.

C: Waterfalls

Four kilometers from the finish line in Caldas de Reis there is a small detour that many pilgrims avoid or don't notice. When you see a sign on the road saying "Santiago-40", cross over, very carefully, and keep going straight ahead. You can cool off in the waterfalls of the Barosa River.

D: Santa Lucia Chapel

After the last straight on road 550, at the entrance on the right is a small chapel built entirely of stone. Regain your strength in these last few kilometers before arriving in Caldas de Reis.

E: Caldas de Reis

The road to Caldas de Reis runs along dirt tracks next to the locals' vegetable gardens. The large piece of green space is interrupted by the small village of Caldas de Reis. Just cross the bridge. It's tradition for pilgrims to rest their feet in the spa next to the church. Once you've recovered, take the opportunity to dine in the center. The small village atmosphere is palpable, and so it's a convivial moment for the pilgrims.

Does Pontevedra really give water to passers-by?

The city's motto is "Pontevedra gives a drink to passers-by". That's why the whole town tends to welcome visitors with hospitality.
