The Pilgrim's Credential is the passport that accompanies you on your spiritual and cultural journey along the Camino de Santiago. Essential for pilgrims who travel the various routes to Santiago de Compostela, the Credential allows you to record the places you pass through by stamping the different stops, such as hostels, churches and other points of interest.
Throughout your walk, each stamp serves as proof of the route you have traveled, and at the end of the pilgrimage, by presenting the Credential with at least two daily stamps, you can request the official certificate of your pilgrimage from Compostela.
To reach the Compostela, you must travel at least
100 km on foot or horseback or,
200 km by bicycle to Santiago de Compostela.
Credential features:
- Practical size: 10 cm x 15 cm (closed) and 48 cm (open), with several pages to record all the stamps along the way.
- Light weight: Only 25 grams, perfect for taking with you without adding weight to your backpack.
- Space for stamps: Multiple pages dedicated to recording the stamps obtained along the Camino.
- Official recognition: Approved by the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, valid for obtaining the Compostela.
- Classic and symbolic design: Stamped with the traditional emblems of the Camino de Santiago and ready to bear the marks of your unique journey.
Whether you're walking for spiritual, cultural or sporting reasons, the Pilgrim's Credential is much more than a document, it's a testimony to your experience and effort. Get yours now and start your adventure on the Camino!
The origin of the Pilgrim's Credential dates back to the Middle Ages, when the Camino de Santiago became one of the most important pilgrimage routes in Christendom. At that time, pilgrims received documents called "laissez-passer" or "letters of recommendation", issued by the Church or civil authorities, to guarantee their protection along the journey and facilitate passage through territories and cities. These documents identified pilgrims and helped prove their legitimate status, differentiating them from ordinary travelers or potential evildoers.
Over time, this practice evolved and consolidated, and the pilgrimage was recorded using stamps obtained from monasteries, churches and other reception points along the Way. These stamps, like the old medieval signs, served as a testimony to the route taken, marking not only the physical journey, but also the spiritual progression of each pilgrim.
The current Pilgrim's Credential, in the format we know today, was made official by the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and other ecclesiastical bodies to regulate and organize the growing flow of pilgrims. More than just proof of the route travelled, the Credential symbolizes the centuries-old tradition of the Camino and the personal commitment of those who walk it. At the end of the pilgrimage, presenting the completed Credencial with at least two daily stamps gives the pilgrim the right to apply for the Compostela, the official certificate that recognizes the pilgrimage to Santiago.
