What to expect on the Marinhas to Viana do Castelo stage
A stage without major difficulties, with a few climbs after Castelo do Neiva. From up high you still catch a glimpse of the Atlantic.
If you want a rest day, Viana do Castelo is worth it. Visit the Interpretation Centre of the Portuguese Coastal Way or, if you still have the energy, climb the 659 steps of the Santa Luzia stairway.
As you leave Marinhas there are stretches beside the road. Follow the yellow arrows and keep a close eye on passing cars.
Marinhas to Viana do Castelo itinerary, point by point
Six stops that shape the day. Every church holds pilgrim secrets.
-
Marinhas
Still close to the main road, this is where you choose between the sea and the mountains. Keep going straight until you find the yellow arrows and watch out for cars.
-
Old Church of São Bartolomeu do Mar
A 17th-century church of medieval inspiration, with blue tiles and humble origins. It reflects the Portuguese tradition of doing a lot with a little.
-
Church of Santiago de Castelo do Neiva
After a climb that is unusual in these parts, the parish church is a good place to rest and fill your water bottle. According to historians, it holds the oldest dedication to Saint James in Portuguese territory, dated 862 and found during restoration work. It is at the entrance, just on the right.
-
Pilgrim stall
After the church of Santiago you come across an unattended stall with food, water, soft drinks and chairs. You take what you like and decide how much to pay. Thank you to whoever keeps it going.
-
Vila Nova de Anha
A few kilometres from Viana do Castelo, it is a good stop before you enter the city. The route goes through the centre, past the Parish Church of São Romão de Anha.
-
Arriving in Viana do Castelo, end of the Marinhas to Viana do Castelo stage
You cross a long, narrow bridge into the city, which you can avoid by taking the ferry. The albergue is just on the other side of the railway line and, if you have the energy, Viana is well worth a stroll.
