Porto–Vairão Leg
The Porto–Vairão leg begins in the historic district of the “Unbeaten City.” Amid the streets and old buildings, adorned with various shades of blue, we walk along the narrow sidewalks, past cars, crowds, and wine cellars.
It is a mostly urban route that will fascinate those who appreciate architecture, but may become tedious for those seeking, above all, contact with nature. The reward comes at the end of the day: upon arriving in Vairão, pilgrims are greeted by vast greenery and a beautiful monastery hidden among the ancient trees that grow there.
The itinerary, stop by stop
Porto Cathedral
The route starts at Porto Cathedral, one of Portugal’s oldest monuments, right in the heart of the “Unconquered City.” Here we can see the first yellow arrows that will guide us over the next few kilometers.
Carvalhido Church
The old Carvalhido Chapel, adorned with the iconic blue tiles so common in the “Unvanquished City,” marks the beginning of the transition from the urban fabric to a quieter area.
Church of St. Peter (Araújo)
The first real place to take a break, between Moreira da Maia and Porto. It has a square with several benches to sit on and a nearby café—a good spot to catch your breath.
Azevedo Pharmacy
In Lameira Square, we find one of the oldest pharmacies still in operation in Portugal, which has been open since April 1737. A brief stop, but one steeped in history.
Maw
A hidden gem in inland Portugal, nestled among the green hills. Upon arrival, we find the monastery, the pilgrims’ hostel, and several affordable cafés and restaurants where we can end the day.
Pilgrim's tip: Since this is a very urban leg of the journey, take the opportunity to stock up on water and food in Porto—services become scarcer as you approach Vairão. Set out early to avoid traffic and the heat as you leave the city.
